BLYM News - August 2019
You've taken a sailing course this summer. What's next? Come and join our introduction to General sailing sessions.
Completed a sailing course with us recently and want to get out on the water? Join our RYA Instructors on one or more of our General Sailing Introduction sessions. Instructors will help you get out on the water for your first General Sailing session. It is the perfect time to get out sailing on your own, meet up with those who you completed your course with and most of all, enjoy being out on the lake with your newly found skills. Members of our expert instructor team will be available throughout the day to offer rigging advice as well as coaching tips on the water to help you through your first sessions. After this, you will be more than capable of turning up to a general sailing session and getting out on the water on your own.
The General Sailing Introduction sessions are on Monday 2nd, Tuesday 3rd and Wednesday 4th September, 9:30am - 12:30pm and 1:30pm - 4:40pm. Instructors will be on hand to help you get used to our general sailing sessions if you haven't tried them before.
We're offering half day sessions (and you can sign up for as many as you like) at £7.50 per session. The cost includes boat, wetsuit and buoyancy hire - everything you need to get onto the water. Please take a look at dates on our website www.blym.org.uk/reunion. It's a great opportunity to meet up with your course friends and see some of your favourite instructors. You can book in advance or you can turn up and pay on the day if you wish, but boats will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.
After this you'll feel more confident to come along to our regular General Sailing sessions (Saturdays 9am - 1pm and 1pm - 5pm) and Splash Club (Wednesdays from 4:30pm until dusk, until the end of September).
We hope you enjoyed your course at BLYM and that we will see you sailing with us in the near future.
Volunteers required Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th September. Can you spare a couple of hours?
Do you have a couple of hours to spare to volunteer for some building and ground work? Please come along anytime between 10am and 4pm - there will be a job for everyone who makes it along. Refreshments will be provided.
If you'd like to find out more please send a note to Ollie.Smith@blym.org.uk.
Sailing every Wednesday afternoon 4.30pm – until dusk continues throughout September, just £4.00 for everyone, plus £1.00 for non-member guests. The whole fleet is available and we've had some excellent wind the last few weeks, so come and enjoy the fun!

We can share some good new in that our sailing fleet of Funboats, Pico and Coypus have had an investment of more than £8,000 for new sails which has really improved the equipment available to our members.
A chandlery range is available at an average discount of 25% on retail price. Please ask about footwear, gloves, buoyancy aids, wetsuits, waterproofs and accessories. We also have a selection of second-hand wetsuits available.
5, 4, … 1 go! Sunday morning racing to start soon - watch this space
Sunday morning racing will resume for the autumn. If you’ve taken your adult Level 2 or junior Stage 3 and you can confidently sail a triangular course, then racing is for you. There will be a Race Briefing at 10am and two races at 10.30am and 11.30am. It is best if you get to the club by 9:30am to set-up your boat. We aim to make our racing as friendly as possible so there will be help available.
Unsure about racing and perhaps the rules?
For the first few sessions we will spend some extra time in the briefing room to run through how the rules work and the first few races are going to be informal to provide some extra coaching. We would love to get as many members involved as possible, give it a try and come along an join us.
The RYA Start Racing course 28th October - 1st November (half term) is run over five days, giving you a comprehensive introduction to the racing rules and helping you to develop your skills to give you greater boat speed, understanding of tactics and strategies. Racing is a brilliant way to develop your sailing ability.
The first Sunday racing event will be published soon.
All of the fantastic training sessions on offer can be found on our Courses Page. If you know of friends or family that would like to start sailing, take on a new challenge or extend their capability please forward this email. We have a lot of return candidates and many bookings from recommendations. Please help us reach out to as many people as possible.
See you at BLYM soon!
